The Family Place

Emergency Shelter Services: The Family Place provides emergency shelter, counseling and emergency relief services for women and children victims of domestic violence at our Safe Campus. The Safe Campus concept is simple: provide everything women and children need to stay safe and escape from their batterers at one confidential location. Services include intensive counseling, medical care, psychological evaluation, day care and after-school programs for children, and job, technical and life skills training for adults all easily and safely accessible.

Transitional Housing: The Family Place Supportive Living Program provides extended-stay apartments on our Safe Campus as well as subsidized housing, education, training and day care and after-school services to give battered women the time and resources to build new lives. The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recognized this program with a Best Practices Award in 2000.

Outreach Services: Victims and their children who need counseling and support services without shelter can receive free group and individual counseling at four locations throughout Greater Dallas. Locations include our Central Dallas location (214-443-7701), two offices in Dallas’ Southern Sector (Fair Park-Pleasant Grove, 214-565-0225 and Oak Cliff, 214-948-5175), and Metrocrest, including Addison, Carrollton, Coppell, Farmers Branch and northwest Dallas (972-243-1611). The Family Place Latina Outreach Program addresses the specific needs of our Spanish-speaking clients (214-443-7704) and received the Community Council of Greater Dallas Award for Excellence in Human Programming. The Partner Advocate program (214-443-7704) provides services to victims whose partners who have been referred to a Battering Intervention and Prevention Program.

Children’s Services: Through play therapy, group and individualized counseling, this program helps children learn to feel safe, stay safe, and, most importantly, stop hurting. Counseling for children is available for clients of our Outreach Services. The Child Development Center at our Safe Campus provides a specialized curriculum for children five and under. By using a multi-disciplined approach, understanding and recognizing the unique needs of traumatized children, The Family Place Child Development Center is the cornerstone of healing for these children.

Incest Recovery Services: The Family Place provides free counseling for adult and adolescent survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse. In addition to core counseling services for adults, the Incest Recovery Program (214-443-7701) offers outreach counseling, training for professionals, and educational outreach about the problems of sexual assault and incest. In 2000, Planned Parenthood of Dallas & Northeast Texas honored our Incest Recovery Program with The Katherine Ripley Award for Education.

Battering Intervention and Prevention Program: Individuals trying to change their violent behavior access specialized group counseling services at our BIPP office (214-692-8295) and at locations in Pleasant Grove and Irving. BIPP is fully accredited by the State of Texas Department of Criminal Justice Criminal Justice Assistance Division and staff work closely with the criminal justice system to provide court-ordered counseling services to the community. Voluntary clients are also served through this fee-based program.

Client Legal Services: The Family Place provides on-site attorneys for clients in cooperation with Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas. These services provide legal support in civil issues including temporary custody orders, divorce and support (spousal and child), custody and visitation, protective orders, emergency orders and writs of attachment.

Faith and Liberty’s Place Family Center: FLP Family Center provides a safe, child-centered environment where trained professionals facilitate supervised child visitation with non-custodial parents. Referrals come directly from the Dallas Family Courts, primarily from child custody cases in which one parent has a history of abusive behaviors toward the other parent and/or child.

Be Project: The Family Place Be Project reaches out to children and youth to help them build healthy relationships and be courageous bystanders. Through classroom education, leadership groups, and counseling, young people learn to “be” – to be safe, be kind, be courageous and be more – to stop the cycle of violence in their schools, their homes and their communities. All services are provided by professionals to students and youth in 3rd grade through college, as well as to faculty members and parents. For more information, call the Be Project program director at 972-243-1611 x-15.

Public Education: Through our speakers’ bureau, a newsletter published three times a year, an active public relations program and powerful public service announcements, The Family Place provides extensive and ongoing education about the negative effects of family violence on our community. To book a speaker or volunteer, call Volunteer Services at 214-443-7714.

Resale Shop: The Family Place Resale Shop collects donations of new and gently used items that benefit our programs in two ways. First, clients at The Family Place, who often come to us with nothing, shop at The Resale Shop using vouchers to purchase the personal and household items that they need. Second, The Resale Shop sells merchandise to the public, raising funds for our programs. The Resale Shop is located at 11722 Marsh Lane, Suite 354, Dallas, TX 75229.
